UK Unemployment rises to highest level since 1996 PDF Print E-mail

The unemployment rate  in the UK rose to 8.3% highest since 1996. The major area of concern is that the number of young people unemployed topped one million at the end of September.

The Office of National Statistics said that unemployment rose 129000 in three months ending September to total 2.62 million, the highest level of unemployed since 1994.

The number of unemployed between the age 16-24, the young unemployment rose 67,000 to total 1.02 million and pushing the rate at 21.9%, which is the highest level since 1986.

Youth unemployment rates are at a record high: In Spain, it is as high at 44%. In Italy it's 28% while France does slightly better at 21%.

Long-term unemployment in UK - those out of work for a year or more  surged by 31,000 over three period to 868,000, while almost half a million people (422,000) have been unemployed for two years or more,  a 29% rise compared to a year ago.
